Freedom Fighter’s murder sparks protest in Pabna

Several hundred locals including a group of freedom fighters have been staging a demonstration demanding justice to the murder of a freedom fighter Mostafizur Rahman Selim in Pabna’s Ishwardi upazila since this morning.

The protesters blocked the Dhaka-Kushtia highway at Rooppur intersection around 11:00am demanding exemplary punishment to killers of Selim.

Selim, 70, also a former secretary of Pakshey union Awami League, was shot dead by two unidentified criminals in the upazila yesterday.

Jahangir Alam, commander of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Pakshey Union unit, said they demanded immediate punishment of the killers.

“It can no way be accepted that a freedom fighter would be killed under broad daylight. We demand the attackers be identified immediately and brought to book.”

They were staging demonstration blocking the highway when the report was filed around 12:15pm.

Contacted, Md Bahauddin Faruki, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said law enforcers were trying their best to apprehend the culprits and waiting for the autopsy report of the victim.

How Selim was killed?

The criminals opened fire on Selim around 9:00pm when he was returning home from a local market.

He was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex after the attack. Finding his condition critical, doctors referred him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Selim died on the way to RMCH.

Ishwardi municipality mayor Abul Kalam Azad said Selim was vocal against corruption and irregularities. He also demanded capital punishment for the killers.
