Man killed in Cox's Bazar ‘gunfight’

A man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Monday.

The deceased was Abdur Rahman, 23, son of Shah Alam, a resident of Moheshkhaliapata in Howaikang union.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf model police station, said being tipped off that a group of drug traders would gather in at Satghoria Para area, a team of police conducted a drive around 4:00am.

Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders opened fire, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gun battle, he added.

After the gunfight, police claimed, they rescued Rahman who sustained bullet injuries and took him to Teknaf upazila health complex where the physicians declared him dead.

Police also recovered 3,000 yaba tablets, one LG, three rounds of cartridge and six round bullet shells from the spot.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
