The High Court (HC) has asked the Housing and Public Works Ministry to submit probe report on the ‘abnormal’ high price paid for household articles to furnish apartments in multi-storey buildings under the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Project in Pabna.

The HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi issued the order following a writ petition filed seeking its directive on the government to form a judicial committee to inquire into the allegations.

Supreme Court lawter Barrister Syed Sayedul Huq Sumon filed the writ petition for the sake of public interest.

According to the order, the probe report has to be submitted through the office of Attorney General after the vacation of the court. Barrister Syed Sayedul Huq Sumon took part in the hearing on behalf of the writ petition while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared on behalf of the state.

“The government has formed two probe committees to investigate into the allegations of irregularities of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Project. At this stage, the HC should not interfere in the matter,” Mahbubey Alam informed the court.

The government on Monday initiated a probe into ‘abnormal’ high price paid for household articles to furnish apartments in multi-storey buildings under the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project in Pabna.

The public works department purchased the household articles, including electric stove, electric kettle, room cleaners, televisions, refrigerators, pillows and washing machines, for furnishing 966 apartments constructed mainly for the Russian engineers and officials of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.
