Recording of depositions against Papia, her husband begins today

A Dhaka tribunal is expected to begin recording witness depositions in an weapons case against the expelled chief of Jubo Mohila League Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Special Tribunal-1 will record the complainant's testimony in the case.

Earlier on 23 August, after framing charges against the pair, the court scheduled Monday to commence trial of the case.

In the situation, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed an indictment sheet against them on 29 June.

On February 22, while trying to leave the country, RAB-1 arrested Papia, her husband, and their two accomplices from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Three lawsuits against them have been filed. Two were filed under the Arms and the Special Powers Acts with the Sher-e - Bangla Nagar Police Station while another was charged against them under the Special Powers Act- 1974 with the Airport Police Station.

Later on 4 August, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also filed a complaint against Papia and her husband for illegally accumulating around Tk 6.24 crore.

RAB members recovered from their possession seven passports, fake notes valued at Tk 25,600, $11,481, 420 Sri Lankan rupees, 301 Indian rupees and two debit cards.

RAB later raided Papia's flats at the Farmgate capital and confiscated a pistol, two magazines, twenty cartridges, five bottles of foreign-made liquor, tk 58,41,000 cash, credit and debit cards from various banks.
