Govt to dredge big rivers in 5 years: LGRD minister

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said the government will dredge all big rivers in next five years to increase navigability.

"The local government ministry has undertaken a Taka 3,000-crore project to increase water containing capacity of rivers," he said speaking as the chief guest at a function to inaugurate day-long Victory Fair, organized by local government division at Agargaon LGED Building in the city, marking Victory Day 2016.

Earlier, the minister unveiled the mural of Bangabandhu in front of the LGED Building.

Mosharrf Hossin said work is going on at the initiative of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) to install the portrait of Bangabandhu in all 64 districts.

He said the constant progress in all sectors during the tenure of the present government Bangladesh will be a middle-income country by 2021. "No evil force will be able to stop this indomitable advancement of the country under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina," he added.

The minister listed the country's achievements in different sectors and said the LGED is playing a pioneering role in country's infrastructure development.

He called upon all institutions under the local government division to work together to reach the people the benefit of independence earned under the leadership of Bangabandhu in exchange for the lives of 30 lakh martyrs.

Local Government Division Additional Secretary Iqramul Huq, LGED Chief Engineer Shyama Proshad Adhikari and Public Health Engineering Department Chief Engineer Mohammad Waliullah were present on the occasion.
