Two middle-aged men were shot dead in what the police described as gunfight between two rival groups at Nimtala Bazar in Chowgachha upazila early Wednesday.

UNB reports from Jessore that the dead were said to be suspected drug peddlers.

The police said they came to know that two groups of drug peddlers locked into a gunfight in the area at dead of night.

A team of police appeared at the spot around 3.00am, according to Waheduzzaman, a sub-inspector at Chowgachha police station.

Sensing the law enforcers' presence, he added, the criminals fled the scene.

The police said they then recovered the bullet-hit bodies of Ekser Ali, 45, son of Abdus Sattar of Baro Kabilpur, and his associate Saidul, 35, a resident of Chowgachha Model Primary School Para, the SI added.

The law enforcers also claimed that they recovered one shutter gun, one bullet and 150 bottles of Phensidyl from the spot.

Ekser was wanted in 21 cases while Saidul in four, said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chowgachha police station.
