Accused, expelled leaders in JU unit of BCL

Newly appointed office bearers of the Jahangirnagar University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League include snatchers, attackers of teachers and girl students, as well as expelled student leaders.

The newly-formed committee also includes names of such students accused o manipulating admission tests, and beating shopkeepers.

Different dailies including Prothom Alo ran reports on the allegations against these leaders of BCL, the student wing of ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL).

The 214-strong full committee of the JU unit BCL was announced on Friday night. Earlier on 27 December, the BCL central committee announced the partial committee of the unit, with Md Jewel Rana as president and Abu Sufian Chanchal general secretary.

There are allegations of sexual harassment and assaulting teachers against the new committee’s vice president Abu Sadat Sayem and joint secretary Jamshed Alam. They were expelled from the party on 27 January.

Vice presidents Minhazul Abedin and Md Yunus Ali Parash have reportedly unpaid bills at the Bat-tala shops on the campus from where they took things on credit.

The Bat-tala shopkeepers kept their shops shut on 22 March 2015 demanding the payment of the outstanding bills from the BCL leaders. On the day before the protests, (21 March 2015), BCL leader Siddiqur Rahman Pratay beat up tea vendor Nahid.

Siddiqur has now been made one of the joint general secretaries in the new committee.

On 6 March 2015, the university authorities suspended vice-president Hamza Rahman Antor for harassing a female student.

The authorities on 18 April lodged a complaint against joint general secretary Md Saddam Hossain for prompting students to keep a residential hall locked.

SM Sharif Ahmed was handed over to police for his involvement in adopting unfair means during the admission test of 2016-17. The authorities on 15 February issued a notice saying Sharif was suspended for his involvement in the admission test forgery.

Asked about this, JU BCL unit president Md Jewel Rana and general secretary Abu Shufian Chanchal said that dedicated persons were recognised in the committee.
