Downpour downs Dhaka

Torrential rainfall, triggered by active monsoon, continued for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday to batter the country, including capital Dhaka, throwing the life out of gear.

Met office recorded 12.0 mm rainfall in the capital in three hours from 6:00 am to 9:00 am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, several parts of the city including Rokeya Sarani, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Senpara Parbata, Merul Badda, Gulshan, Bijoy Sarani, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Arambagh, Motijheel, Sukrabad, Kolabagan, Gulistan, Manik Mia Avenue and the parts of Old Dhaka were inundated due to the incessant downpour.

Commuters, especially office goers and students of schools and colleges have been facing severe problems in reaching their destinations for lack of transports.

Many roads got waterlogged due to the rain, intensifying their woes. The city dwellers were seen stranded for hours in traffic jam.

Low-income people, especially the day labourers, are suffering much as rains are disrupting their normal pace of life.

Apart from, rickshaw pullers and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers have been charging excessive fair taking advantage of the inclement weather.

However, the intensity of rainfall across the country is likely to come down from today, said Md Shaheenul Islam, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Meanwhile, maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower signal, said a Met office special bulletin on Wednesday.
