President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the Liberation War martyrs by placing wreaths at Savar's National Memorial; marking the 49th Day of Victory.

The president and the prime minister remained in respectful silence for some time after placing the wreaths on Monday morning as a show of profound respect for the memory of the martyrs of the 1971 Great War of Liberation.

A smartly turned out contingent from the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Navy, and the Bangladesh Air Force offered a state greeting when the last message was accompanied by bugles.

Flanked by senior party figures, Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League, laid another wreath as the party leader at the National Memorial.

The country is celebrating the 49th Victory Day, marking the most precious day after a nine-month-long War of Independence since Bangladesh was liberated from the occupying forces of Pakistan.

Forty-eight years ago, on December 16, 1971, Bangladesh was born as an independent country under the leadership of Bangabandhu Nation Father Sheik Mujibur Rahman, for the supreme sacrifice of three million martyrs and the dignity of 200,000 people.
