On Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) directed public university authorities to close evening courses at all public universities as these courses tarnish the educational institutions ' profile.

The regulatory body released a 13-point directive to the public university vice chancellors across the region.

The guidelines require proper implementation of the duties of vice chancellors, seeking permission from UGC before opening a new department and position, observing university rules when providing employment and promotion, said a press release signed by Dr. Shamsul Arefin, UGC's director of communication and information rights.

The orders came after the president and also the public university chancellor Abdul Hamid in DU convocation on Wednesday said a group of teachers converted public universities into business establishments by conducting evening courses outside of normal educational activities.
