An explosion believed to have been caused by a gas leak ripped through Sylhet’s Jalalabad central bus terminal this afternoon injuring at least two people.

Three vehicles including a private car, a microbus and a motorcycle were burnt in the fire that erupted around 12:00pm.

Witnesses said the explosion was caused by a gas leak and blamed the state-run Jalalabad Gas Transmission & Distribution System Ltd. Its fire raged for about two hours.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (south) Zedan Al Musa said the blast was caused by a big leak in the gas supply line of the city.

Three units of fire fighter brought the fire under control around 2:15pm after two hours of frantic efforts, the ADC said. Police cordoned off the area and made it off-limits to people.

Jalalabad gas authorities have been informed of the incident.

The injured were rushed Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, among them two were in critical condition, ADC Musa said. However, their identities were yet to be ascertained.
