In January next year the government approved the British Council's proposal to conduct GCSE and A Level exams for English medium school students in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Secondary and Higher Education Directorate under the Ministry of Education gave the requisite approval and on Sunday issued a letter to the Country Director of the British Council containing four conditions for conducting the examinations.

Sunday's media report revealed that the organizers of the examinations would strictly follow the health guidelines drawn up by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

A maximum of 1,600 students will be permitted to take exams at 35 locations throughout the country.

Students would need to remain six feet away from each other.

However, according to the letter, the government would be able to cancel the approval at any time in the' interest of the people'.
