Acclaimed Indian director Shyam Benegal has been selected to make a feature film based on the life and work of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bangladesh and India will jointly produce the biopic on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, state minister for information Tarana Halim told reporters on Monday at the secretariat.

She said a three-member expert panel from Bangladesh will help Benegal make the film.

Tarana said the work on the film will start after the family members of Bangabandhu approve the script.

India earlier suggested Bangladesh the names of three of its top directors Shyam Benegal, Goutam Ghosh and Kauskhik Ganguly -- for making the film.

The state minister said they selected Benegal as he earlier made a film on the life of Indian independence leader Subhas Chandra Bose. "We've selected him giving priority to his work."

On 8 April 2017, Bangladesh and India agreed to jointly produce a film based on the life and works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and a documentary on Bangladesh's liberation war.

Tarana said a target was set to release the film by 2021, marking Bangabandhu's birth anniversary.

She, however, said the film director will determine how many times may require to complete the film.
