Photo exhibition illustrates war moments

An exhibition has been going on in the capital city since December 1, offering the unique opportunity of revisiting some of the most significant moments of the War of Independence in 1971. 

The exhibition titled "Bangabandhu and War of Independence" at the Military Museum will continue till December 17, marking the 45th anniversary of the Victory Day. The exhibition will remain open to public everyday from 9am to 6pm.

A total of 115 pictures are on display at the exhibition, showing the joyous moments for the whole nation when the Pakistani occupation army formally surrendered on December 16 in 1971 and people across the country celebrated the victory after nine months of war. 

Some rare pictures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with his family and world leaders like the then Indian premier Indira Gandhi are on display at the exhibition. Few glorious moments of Bangabandhu's personal life at his Dhanmondi house are also vivid in some pictures.

A number of pictures illustrate the atrocity of the Pakistan occupation army while some other photos document the role of women in the war of independence. 

The photo of the historical surrender of the Pakistan army at Suhrawardy Udyan is also on display at the exhibition, getting most attention of the visitors particularly the children. 

"The exhibition is a very good event especially for the children to help them learn the real history of our War of Independence," said Masud Chowdhury, who brought his family from Mirpur, Dhaka to the exhibition. 

He said children would grow up as patriotic citizens if they could know the real history and the culture of their country.

Organisers said like Masud, many people from different areas of the city and afar thronged the exhibition everyday to take a closer look at the history of the war that brought the nation independence on December 16, 1971.
