Top-order batsman Mushfiqur Rahim fought a lone battle till the last over of the innings as Bangladesh posted 261/10 at the end of their innings against Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Rahim (144) notched up his highest individual score in the 50-over format for Bangladesh to help his side post a challenging total.

He was involved in a 133-run third wicket stand with Mohammad Mithun (63) -- who also contributed important runs to help Bangladesh rescue from 1/2 to 134/3. For Sri Lanka, Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 4/23.

Bangladesh also suffered a major blow in form of their top-order batsman Tamim Iqbal, who was ruled out of the entire tournament with a broken wrist.

Tamim had taken a blow on his wrist early in the match from a delivery by Suranga Lakmal

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first against Sri Lanka in the 14th edition of the Asia Cup Cricket at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE on Saturday.

The Group ‘B’ match of the six-nation tournament began at 5:30 pm Bangladesh time with both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, both plagued with injuries, looking for a winning start.

Earlier, Bangladesh reached the final of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2012 and the T20 version in 2016, but both times they missed out titles, losing to Pakistan and India by two runs and eight wickets respectively.

This time, Bangladesh have come into the tournament on the back of a 2-1 series win over the West Indies in the Caribbean, while Sri Lanka lost their last assignment, a five-match home series, against South Africa, but have some momentum after having won the last two games of that series and then the one-off T20I.
