Bus accident kills at least 14 in central Nepal

On Sunday morning, officials reported, Xinhua said, at least 14 passengers were killed while about 16 others were injured in a bus crash at Sindhupalchowk district in central Nepal.

Ganesh Khanal, spokesman for the Sindhupalchowk District Police Office, told Xinhua, "12 passengers died on the spot while two breathed their last in the ambulance. The wounded were already sent to hospitals." According to police, the bus en route to the capital city of Kathmandu from Dolakha's Kalinchowk fell a few hundred meters down the road in the district's rural Sunkoshi municipality. The Kalinchowk of Dolakha is a popular destination for religion and tourism.

In the bus there were at least 32 people traveling. After the crash, the driver fled from the scene while the assistant was severely injured.

The police, who had yet to determine all the deceased's identities.

Overcrowded trucks, bad highways and shoddy public transport infrastructure have resulted in numerous road accidents in Nepal in recent years.
