Agriculturist Day being celebrated

The Agriculturist Day is being observed in the country today through various progrmmes.

On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday issued separate messages wishing all programmes of the day a success.

President Abdul Hamid, in his message, said “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made a historic announcement giving first class status to the agriculturists on the day in 1973 in recognition of their contributions to the country’s socio-economic development”.

Attaching the highest importance to the agriculture sector, Bangabandhu built various institutions after independence of the country for conducting different activities, including providing education on agriculture, conducting research and distributing agricultural materials, he added.

Agriculture, farmers and agriculturists remain as interdependent entity in the country’s development thought, the President said, adding, “The new agri-technology, high-yielding seeds and agricultural inventions are helping the country in producing fish, meat, eggs and milk to meet the food demand of 16 crore people”.

He hopped that the agriculturists and agri-scientists would contribute to build hunger and poverty free Sonar Bangla’ dreamt by Bangabandhu.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made a milestone in the history by upgrading the agriculturists to the class-I status. As a result the meritorious students are being inspired to the agriculture education, she added.

“The nation remembers the contributions of agriculturists with due respect in meeting the food demand of 16 crore people, by increasing production of food grain, fish, milk, meat and egg three times higher than pre-liberation period despite chronological increase of population and decrease of cultivable land,” the premier said.

Sheikh Hasina hoped that apart from performing professional duties, agriculturists, the friends of farmers and agriculture, would continue their participation and efforts during any necessity of the country.
