Captains of six participating teams have addressed the media ahead of the start of Asia Cup 2018 in Dubai. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are eager to begin well in the tournament.

The 14th edition of Asia Cup will kick off in Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh are in Group B which also includes Afghanistan.

Speaking on the tournament opener, Tiger skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has urged on good start. “It’s an important tournament for us. We have done our homework. Hopefully we will do well. We are looking forward to the first match against Sri Lanka.

“If we can do well in the opening game then we have a chance to progress further in the tournament,” he said.

When asked about whether Asia Cup is a preparation for next year’s World Cup, Mashrafe replied that they would like to concentrate on current affairs.

“As far is World Cup concerned, it’s still too far. I think it’s 10 to 12 months (8 to be exact) left. But we have to continue with the process,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews has stated that it would be a challenge for them to face Bangladesh. Sri Lanka are already hit by injury news of Dinesh Chandimal and Danushka Gunathilaka.

“Disappointing that Danushka had to go back. As Bangladesh are a challenge for us having played well in the last 18 months we need to overcome them and play well.”

Dubai’s condition could be a factor in the opening game. It is expected to remain warm throughout the day. The pitch factor is also on Chandimal’s mind.

“The mindset is to go and score as many runs as we can score. We need to assess the wicket first. Once we assess either we need to put up a good total on the board or if we are chasing we need to get there.”

“The dew will be a factor but we are not sure. This looks a good wicket. Could be bit slow. But we cannot say hundred per cent until we play on them and know. Ultimately we have to play well,” said Mathews.
